The Stable Isotope Research Facility (SIRF) in the Department of Geological Sciences houses four isotope ratio mass spectrometers dedicated to analysis of H, C, N, O, and S. Since 2009, SIRF has occupied space in the new Multidisciplinary Science Building 2, where it continues a long tradition of serving faculty, students, and visitors to Indiana University, as well researchers from other institutions.
- Thermo Electron MAT253 with a fluorination line as inlet, dedicated to the study of multiple isotopes of sulfur (32S, 33S, 34S, 36S) as SF6.
- Thermo Delta V with an Elemental Analyzer inlet for 34S/32S analysis
- ThermoFinnigan Delta Plus XP with dual inlet, Gas Bench, Elemental Analyzer, TC/EA, and GC, for the analysis of isotopes of H, C, N, and O in a wide range of materials.
- Finnigan MAT252 for the analysis of C and O.
The Stable Isotope Research Facility employs a range of continuous-flow inlets for the analysis of solid, liquid, and gas samples. These include two Costech ECS4010 Elemental Analyzers for solid and liquid samples (C, N, and S), a ThermoFinnigan Gas Bench for carbonate minerals, waters, and air samples, and two Thermo Trace Ultra GCs for compound-specific isotope analysis. The MAT253, Delta Plus XP, and MAT252 are configured with variable volume dual-inlets for materials prepared off-line. In addition, SIRF houses a methane preconcentrator inlet for the H and C isotopic analysis of methane, ethane, and propane.
