This award supports and encourages superior work by staff and students in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. It is hoped that ultimately the income will be large enough to make possible a scholarship or fellowship for an outstanding student.
Cumings – Malott Memorial Fund
Biography: E.R. Cumings, 1874-1967

Edgar Roscoe Cumings was a long-time chair of the Geology department of Indiana University from 1904 to 1942. He arrived at IU in 1898, after doing graduate work at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He later took a leave of absence to obtain his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1903. He and his students studied the paleontology of Indiana and began building the IU Paleontology Collection in earnest. Cumings notably led work on the Cincinnatian (Late Ordovician) of Indiana, the Silurian reefs in the northern part of the state, and on the fauna of the Salem Limestone. Cumings was originally from Ohio and was married to Frances L. Cumings, originally of Pennsylvanian. They had two children, Edith K. and Edgar C. Cumings.
Biography: Clyde Arnett Malott

Clyde Arnett Mallot was born on September 10, 1887, in Atlanta, Indiana. He was the son of John Franklin and Alice (Fippen) Malott. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in 1913, his A.M. in 1915, and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1919.
Malott was a teacher in Indiana public schools from 1909-1915. He joined the instructional staff in the Department of Geology, Indiana University in 1916-1924. He was a professor of Geology from 1924-1947, and acting department head of Geology and Geography from 1941-1945. He was engaged in geological research in Indiana since 1947. He was a staff member in the Oklahoma Geological Survey, summer 1916; Indiana Geological Survey, 1919-1921. Malott was a geologist for the Empire Gas & Fuel Company, summers 1918 and 1923, and a geologist for Pure Oil Corporation in 1924. He served as acting professor of Geology at Williams College, 1st semester 1929-1930, and was a member of staff, Illinois Geological Survey, summer 1930.
