Juergen Schieber has been awarded the prestigious Sorby Medal in recognition "of his extensive research that has revolutionized our understanding of mud and shale sedimentology."
The Sorby Medal is the highest award of the International Association of Sedimentologists. It is awarded once every 4 years to scientists of eminent distinction in sedimentology. Juergen is only the 13th recipient, his predecessors including Robert Folk, Charlotte Schreiber, and Francis Shepard.
The award is named for Henry Clifton Sorby, an English geologist who was known for his work on petrography, the origin of limestones and siliciclastic rocks, and metallurgy and consists of a medal and a certificate and a life-long full membership of IAS. Juergen will be honored at the International Sedimentological Congress later this summer in Beijing, where he will deliver the Sorby Medal Lecture, which will be published in Sedimentology.

"A note about the coat from Juergen: The jacket is my "coat of many shales". My daughter made it for me, she designs and makes clothing and fashion in general. The coat is made from thin section images of shales I have worked on over time, starting in the Precambrian and working up to the Jurassic at least. And when I flip up the collar it reads: I am a geologist, I walk in eternity. My daughter and I obviously have a soft spot for Dr. Who (there is even an inside pocket for jelly babies). You can discern the Dr. Who connection from the title of my first paper on Martian mudstones: “Encounters with an Unearthly Mudstone”."
