EAS E116 Our Planet and Its Future

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is once again participating in the College of Arts + Science’s semester study abroad program in Salerno, Italy. The program provides a unique opportunity to study Earth science in an extraordinary international context.

Students take part in an integrated overseas study program—taught in English by IU faculty for IU credits. The Earth and Atmospheric Sciences course (EAS-E 116) Our Planet and Its Future is led by Prof. Michael Hamburger.

The program is designed to provide broad academic credits to keep students on track with College major requirements.

It integrates liberal arts disciplines into one fascinating experience-based program that allows students to explore the remarkable geology of the Italian coast, including the iconic sites of Italian geology and classical civilization.

Paestum Greek temples
Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii
Herculaneum
Marine research station
Naples, the Amalfi coast, and Positano
Sites of historic earthquake damage
Roman aqueducts
Together with iconic cultural, culinary, archeological, and art history sites along the Italian coast

An IU academic director will be in residence for the entire program, and other IU faculty will be in Italy to teach courses. All classes will be taught in English, so Italian is not required but students will learn some Italian language. Students are housed in shared apartments in the medieval part of Salerno.

Housing

If you’re making a decision about housing in Bloomington for the 2023-2024 academic year, you should know that you will not have to pay a fee to break a housing contract with RPS for the purpose of studying abroad on this program.
