What topics have you been most excited to learn about in ATS classes?

I have loved learning how the atmosphere works. I’ve always been fascinated by storms and severe weather, so Mesoscale Meteorology has been my favorite class so far at IU. I was also excited to improve my forecasting knowledge and abilities, and classes like Synoptic Meteorology and Weather Forecasting and Analysis have definitely made me a more confident forecaster.

What has been the most interesting/influential experience you have had as a major?

The most influential experience I’ve had as an ATS major was on the first day of classes in Fall 2017. It was the day of the eclipse and the entire Weather Analysis and Forecasting class was spent outside watching the eclipse unfold. That was an awesome day.

What advice would you give to new students in the major?

I would suggest getting involved with weather-related extracurricular activities. There are so many cool things to get involved with to explore your interest in weather beyond the classroom! I would suggest getting involved with the Weather Club, or even being a student broadcast meteorologist with IU Student Television! Not only are these are great ways learn more about meteorology, but it also is an opportunity to meet more students studying ATS – and everyone is super nice and always willing to help!
